Biography

Stijn Cole starts from landscape pictures to make abstract paintings. The process involves digital deconstruction of the picture in the 256 most abundant colours, which are subsequently arranged following luminosity. The result is a pixeled painting with 256 squares, each representing one of the typical colours in the landscape. One of the main characteristics of the Colorscape paintings is that at first sight they look abstract, geometric, rational and ordened, yet at the same time they seduce the viewer with their impressionistic luminiscence. It becomes even more interesting when Cole introduces the element of time by making sequences of Colorscapes of the same landscape with 30 minutes intervals, revealing the infinite changes of the light and colours. Another facet of Cole’s oeuvre are the extremely detailed landscape pencil drawings. In analogy with the time sequences of his paintings, Cole combines drawings from different points of view, thus creating position sequences.

In 2010 Stijn Cole won the price of the province of Oost-Vlaanderen and he was artist in residence in the Museum of Fine Arts (Ghent). In 2012 Cole participated in Façade (Be-Part, Waregem).
