Biography

Most sculptures of Tim Breukers are made in clay. His work presents consumer culture without being about it. Breukers models for instance the plastic Hartman chair or the big bags used in construction to transport sand, clay and other materials. His sculptures are the result of very straightforward actions and he enjoys the changes his work undergo during the ceramic process, like changes in scale during the first firing, changing the colour and reducing the work’s size even further during the application of glaze. Moreover, Breukers also reveals how his work is made, how it is structured. Supports in the shape of wooden slats are added. Parts of the oven’s floor, mislaid tools, trash and grit; everything seems to be assigned a role in the sculptures. Playing with the ‘making process’ itself disavows the aesthetics of an autonomous sculpture. The end product emphasises that it was made.

Tim Breukers studied at the European Ceramic Work Center (Den Bosch) and at the Rijksakademie (Amsterdam). In 2016 Breukers has a MMCA residency in Seoul and a duo show with Andreas Arndt in De Pont (Tilburg).
