Bio

Maryam Najd was educated in Teheran and Antwerp, two cultural and artistic extremes. This is reflected in her figurative and abstract paintings. Overcoming the traditionalist, conflict-laden and oppressive context of the Middle East in favour of Western ‘freedom’, Najd has been developing a highly individual vocabulary that establishes a critical yet respectful dialogue between the two worlds. Recent themes in her work are the freedom of the Western women, and today’s refugee and migrant crisis.

Maryam Najd was a resident at Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin and International Studio and Curatorial programm (ISCP), New York. She participated in Fading (museum of Elsene), Indian Caps – the Choice of Jan Fabre (Antwerp), (my private) HEROES (museum MARTa, Herford). In 2016 Maryam Najd had a solo show in Groeningemuseum Bruges.
